Coastal FC recently became aware of specific allegations relating to one of our coaches.
Although the allegations pre-date the coach’s time at Coastal FC, we took immediate action and suspended the coach in question, pending a review of the risk management implications. We did this to ensure a healthy and safe environment for all of our players and members.
At the time this coach was hired, we used a screening process standard for hiring all our BC Soccer Premier League (BCSPL) coaches that included criminal record background checks, reference checks, interviews and vetting of that information at a committee and board level. This screening process is consistent with the screening criteria currently recommended by the Coaching Association of Canada’s Responsible Coaching Movement.
During the hiring process of this coach, we were aware of a single unsubstantiated rumour regarding alleged conduct concerning an adult player. Through this screening process, details of this rumour could not be substantiated and no risk management concerns were identified. At no time were we aware of allegations of inappropriate behaviour with minors. Nor are we aware of any such allegations during his time at Coastal FC.
The safety and well-being of our 4,000-plus players and staff is our top priority. We take this matter seriously and hold ourselves accountable for providing a safe and respectful environment. Prudent HR policies require that we evaluate the risk management implications of this new information. Because this is a personnel matter, for privacy reasons we are unable to comment further.
