Danielle Steer – The Road to the UBC Thunderbirds CIS Women’s Soccer Program
Danielle began her soccer career at age 5 with Semiahmoo FC (now Coastal FC) and at age 10 when rep soccer began, she moved on the team. She was selected for the Whitecaps Prospects program in her first year of eligibility at age 11 and played with the program each summer until she was selected to the BC Provincial team at age 13. Danielle played with TEAM BC until she graduated from the program at age 16. When our club received a BCSPL franchise when Danielle was 13, she was selected to the Coastal FC U13 team and stayed with the program through the balance of her minor soccer career, which will end in June.
Danielle was very fortunate to be able to have been able to play in 3 Canadian National Championships – at age 15 being called up to play with the Coastal FC U18 team and twice with her own teammates at U16at SSAP and U17 in Vaughn Ontario. During those years, Danielle was also selected to the Western Canada Summer Games team at U16 which travelled to Fort McMurray to win Gold for TEAM BC.
While playing with Coastal FC at U16 in the prestigious San Diego Surf Cup Collegiate Scouting tournament, Danielle received interest from more than 15 US colleges, mostly NCAA Div 1 schools. After considering options in the US and all of the top Canadian universities, Danielle elected to follow her 2 older sisters into playing in Canadian universities on scholarships and committed to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and Coach Jesse Symons, who had coached Danielle with the Vancouver Whitecaps Prospects. Danielle will be a 2 sport athlete at UBC, running track with focus on the 800m event.
Danielle considers herself very fortunate to have been able to play with our club from her very first game right through until the very last of her minor soccer career. She has been blessed with great people who have coached her during her time with our club, starting with her Dad Mike, Tyler Ginther, Geoff Killam, Geoff Poulton and for the past 4 seasons with Steven Duffy, all supported by terrific assistant coaches Alan Campbell, Gurveen Clair and Mark Baldisimo.
Danielle was named as the recipient of the BCSPL EA Sports Athletic scholarship award winner on May 15th, and the presentation will be made to her on field prior to the Vancouver Whitecaps game at BC Place on June 17th.
