Message Regarding COVID-19 & Player Evaluations

As we continue to feel the impact of COVID-19, we have been receiving many inquires from our members and volunteers asking similar questions from when we might get back to playing, to what measures the club will put in place to ensure the health and safety of participants once play resumes. As you are aware, these are uncertain and unprecedented times and while an exact date to resume has not been identified, Coastal will continue to follow the direction and guidelines of our governing bodies and health authorities when a return to play is established.

As we try to navigate and plan throughout these difficult times, one of the more frequently asked questions has been how the club will be dealing with the formation of rep teams for the 2020/2021 fall season. We understand that post season player evaluations are a traditional part of the selection process, however in light of the current suspension of play and social distancing restrictions, we are going to adjust the normal approach to our rep team and player selection process. As normal, we will ensure the honesty and integrity of the process remains intact.

Evaluation Timeline:

The process for the upcoming Coastal FC Evaluations for Fall 2020/2021:

Step 1 - Players who wish to be considered for selection to this seasons rep team program must register online by no later the 5PM, APRIL 27th DEADLINE.

Step 2 - Once all registrations have been received, Coastal FC technical staff will hold an online selection meeting with each team’s coaching staff to discuss the player registrations.

Step 3 - Having reviewed all registrations, players will fall into one of the following three categories based on player performance and evaluation over the course of the previous season:

  • Immediate resign - Player will be offered a spot to remain on the rep team they played with the previous season, or they may be offered a spot up a level.

  • Under evaluation - Player will be offered a spot to begin the season on the rep team they played with the previous season, however they will be evaluated through September using the clubs player advancement program to determine the right level. This may require a player to move up a level or down a level at any point during the evaluation window.

  • Release - Player will not be offered a spot to remain on the team they were with the previous season, however they will be offered a spot to play at a lower rep level, or house level.

Step 4 - Following the selection meeting with Coastal’s technical staff, the club will send out invites to selected players. Players will then have 24 hours to accept or decline the offered spot.

Step 5 - Once all rep rosters have been filled, the club will send out regrets letters to those that were unsuccessful and provide them registration details for the club house program.

We acknowledge this approach is an adjustment to the normal process, however we are very confident that our Player Advancement Program and season long evaluation process allows us to responsibly and fairly select and place the right players at the right levels.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does the evaluation process work?

The club operates a 6-7 month evaluation period starting in September and ending February/March, depending on the age group. Player performance in training and games between September and February/March is the most significant evaluation period. This period is the main opportunity for players to showcase their abilities and earn selection to the team for the following season.

In advance of the online selection and team formation meetings, we want to take a moment to provide you answers to some common questions that typically arise, and what you can expect after the conclusion of the online selection meetings.

How are players evaluated and selected?

  • Players are evaluated and selected through a combination of season long scouting at training sessions, games, academy sessions, feedback from club coaches, and feedback from club technical staff. Age group head coaches have spent several months familiarizing themselves with players within the age group via the Player Advancement Program over an extended period. This thorough process ensures that final selections can be based on a players performance over the course of the season, and not solely be based on a players performance during 1-2 on-field evaluations.

How many Rep/Development teams will be selected?

  • The club technical staff will inform the players and parents after assessing both the ability and number of players that register.

How many players will be selected for each team?

  • Between 14-17 outfield players, and between 1-2 goalkeepers, to make teams of between 16-18 players total.

How will I know if I have been selected to the program?

  • Players will receive an email if they have been selected and instructions on next steps for registration in the Rep/Development program.

How will I know if I have not been selected to the program?

  • Players will receive an email informing them they have not been selected and instructions on next steps for registration in the House program.

How will I know if I am still Under Evaluation?

  • Players will receive a discussion with their head coach and a follow up email informing them they are still Under Evaluation and a decision on their final placement will be made by September 30th.

What is the process and timelines for offering spots?

The timeline for completing the entire process can take between 3-7 days depending on how many teams there are, and if any unforeseen issues arise. The process is outlined as follows:

  • Step 1 - Selected Division 1 players will be offered placement on the Division 1 roster.

  • Step 2 - Upon receiving the offer, Division 1 players will have 24 hours to accept a position on the team. Once all spots have been accepted we move to the next step.

  • Step 3 - Selected Division 2 players will be offered placement on the Division 2 roster after the completion of the Division 1 roster.

  • Step 4 - Upon receiving the offer, Division 2 players will have 24 hours to accept a position on the team. Once all spots have been accepted, we move to the next step.

  • Step 5 - If another team is to be created, the same process as above will apply.

  • Step 6 - Once all team rosters have been completed, players that are not selected will receive a letter informing them.

If a player chooses to delay acceptance, will the club hold the spot past the 24 hour acceptance window, or will the club continue to offer spots and build the roster?

  • The club will not hold spots for players who delay acceptance past the 24 hour window and will continue to offer spots and build the roster until it is complete.

What options exist for those not offered a spot in the Coastal FC Rep/Development program?

  • We encourage those that are not selected to register in the Coastal FC House program when the registration becomes available in the coming weeks.

Is there a minimum commitment level for players offered a spot in the Coastal FC Rep/Development program?

Yes, there is a strong expectation that players entering this level of play agree to and fulfil the following commitment level:

  • Players registering for the Rep program must fulfil 75% of the basic program commitments (2 training sessions + 1 game per week), this way program numbers and quality service delivery can be maintained

  • Players registering for Rep program must make CFC their priority whenever a conflict exists with other sports and activities

  • Players are welcome to participate in other sports and activities as long as it doesn’t conflict with CFC Rep programming

  • Any potential absence or conflict should be communicated to the head coach well in advance

Is it realistic I can fulfil the basic program commitments (2 training sessions + 1 game per week) if I am involved in another high level sport or activity?

  • In our experience, it is very challenging to fulfil the basic program commitments if you are involved in another high level sport or activity

Does this higher level of commitment force players to choose one sport or activity over another?

No, players are not required to give up any other sports to activities, however players should responsibly choose a level that minimizes scheduling conflicts

  • Less challenging: Rep Soccer + House Hockey, or Rep Hockey + House Soccer

  • Very challenging: Rep Soccer + Rep Hockey

Ending Statement

We hope this answers most of the common questions, however the technical staff will be at the field to address any others that arise during the course of the process.
